About the game
2048 is a sliding number puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. You swipe in one of four directions, and all tiles slide as far as they can in that direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with their combined value. The goal is to create a tile with the value 2048.
Created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014 as a rewrite of an existing game, 2048 became one of the most addictive browser puzzles of the decade. The elegance is in the constraint: every move you make shifts all tiles, so every swipe has consequences four tiles deep.
How to play
- Swipe or press arrow keys to slide all tiles in that direction.
- When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with double the value.
- After every move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty spot.
- Reach the 2048 tile to win. You can keep playing after winning to chase a higher score.

Five strategy tips
1. Corner strategy
Keep your highest tile in one corner (bottom-right is popular). Build a chain of descending tiles along one edge.
2. Never swipe up
Swiping up is almost always bad — it pushes your large tiles away from the bottom edge and breaks your chain.
3. Fill the bottom row first
A full bottom row is harder for the game to disrupt. Keep it packed and work upward.
4. Think two moves ahead
Before each swipe, consider where the new tile might appear. Every move affects the entire grid.
5. Don't panic with bad spawns
A 4 tile appearing in the wrong spot is not game over. Rebuild your chain calmly — the game rewards patience.
Why you'll like it
2048 is one of those rare puzzles where you can play for five minutes or fifty. The simple rules hide enormous strategic depth, and reaching 2048 for the first time is genuinely thrilling.
Frequently asked questions
Can I undo a move?
No — every move is permanent. Think before you swipe.
Is there a maximum tile?
The theoretical maximum is 131,072 (if you merge perfectly), but 2048 is the practical goal.
Does it work on phones?
Yes — swipe gestures work perfectly on touch screens.
